Making progress

WILMSLOW Albion made it through to the second round of the Cheshire Cup at the second attempt after a tremendous 2-1 victory at St Werburghs.

After drawing 2-2 with the Chester side the previous week, Albion knew they would have to raise their game in order to progress - and raise it they did.

But it was the home side who took the lead early on when their striker broke through the defence and rounded Albion goalkeeper Chris Fiddler.

Albion pushed forward in search of an equaliser and got their reward as Damien James continued his impressive start to the season with a great strike to level matters.

And with 10 minutes remaining, Albion midfielder Richard Amri went on a superb run into the penalty box before being up-ended, leaving the referee with no choice but to award a penalty. Up stepped captain James to coolly slot the ball home and book the visitors a place in the next round.

Wilmslow will now face another West Cheshire League side in round two, having been drawn at Castrol Social from Ellesmere Port on October 29.

Albion will hope to build on their cup success when they entertain Springhead in their first home league game of the season on Saturday, kick-off 2:30pm.
