PRESIDENTS Cup holders Styal made no bones about their intention to keep a grip on the trophy this year with a five-goal demolition of lacklustre visitors Crosfields.

Martin Scholes' men scored only once in the first half when Carwyn Williams hooked onto a loose ball.

However, it was a goalmouth incident at the other end, which provided the drama of the first half. Styal Keeper Nick Veron showed courage in diving into a scrummage of legs to gather the ball and dislocate his finger in the process. Vernon was duly dispatched to hospital and replaced by right back Nathan Cawley.

In the 53rd minute a mazy run by winger Craig Brennan ended with Paul McNally burying the ball into the bottom corner from close range.

Crosfields pulled one back within five minutes, but Styal pressed on and won a penalty when Williams was upended. Opting to take the spotkick himself, the Welsh striker saw his effort saved spectacularly by the Crosfields keeper. Styal would not be tethered, though, and made a bundle of chances as the minutes ticked by.

Paul Marchbank put Styal 3-1 ahead and to the delight of Styal fans, long-term absentee John Thornton popped up in the six yard box to nod home the fourth before Williams made up for his earlier penalty miss with a converted spotkick on the final whistle.
