Success for Scarab

THE SCARAB Triathlon Club enjoyed a day of success at the national triathlon club relays at the National Watersports Centre in Nottingham.

Members of the Wilmslow Leisure Centre-based club each swam 400m, cycled 15km and ran 5km in a relay.

The men’s elite team put in an excellent performance to claim 31st place in their category and 36th overall out of over 200 teams.

Hamish Shaw and Christian Preece, who will represent the north-west at this month’s inter-regional championships, gave the team the perfect start in the swim.

The team then all put in consistent bike legs on a windy course that caused some nasty accidents.

On the run, the team showed their class with Ben Chidgey in particular claiming a few rival scalps.

Mark Kavanagh, currently training for the most gruelling triathlon event, the Ironman UK, brought Scarab home in a time of 3hr 21min, ahead of many top national teams.

In the mixed and open team events, Scarab members kept the standard high. Star performer was 15-year-old Lewis Sanders, recently selected for the Mazda regional academy for young triathletes with potential.

Head coach Simon Clapham said: "For a small club to perform this well at a national event is fantastic.

"The only north-west team to beat our men was Manchester Triathlon Club who are probably 10 times the size of Scarab, so we were really delighted."
