Pownall Hall School’s young rugby players lifted the Moor Allerton Tag Rugby Cup as youngsters from across the North-West were introduced to the sport in a non-contact form.
The Pownall squad beat teams from the host school Moor Allerton, St John’s and Merton House Hall, before beating Linden Preparatory School 6-5 in the final, in a counting system where teams receive one point for every try.
The concept combines both league and union rules with teams allowed five phases of play, or five tags, before handing over possession.
Pownall won courtesy of skipper Alex Mayo’s handling skills and vision, with the powerful running of Ross Hook and the sheer pace of speed merchant Michael Burns on the wing.
Pownall sports master Angela Jones said: "It is a fantastic way of introducing youngsters to a sport which may at first seem a little physically intimidating.
"It was a superb day that brought out the best in our boys’ running and handling skills - perhaps Brain Ashton should take note."
