Life on the Open road

STYAL’S attached professional David Horsey will take on the world’s top golfers in his first-ever Open Championship at Royal Birkdale this week.

After recording his first win on the Challenge Tour three weeks ago, rookie pro Horsey did it again in France with victory in the AGF-Allianz Europende Lyon tournament at Golf du Gouverneur.

His double success meant Horsey hit the top of the Challenge Tour Order of Merit and made the jump into the main European Tour almost a formality.

In between these victories Horsey secured a place in the Open in a qualifying tournament, taking on and beating some of the game’s top names.

Horsey will be sure of great support from a huge number of Styal members who will be trekking to Southport to watch the star, who came up through the junior ranks.

He will also be looking forward to meeting up with former Cheshire colleagues, Jamie Howarth and Paul Waring.

Howarth said of Horsey: "David was the first Cheshire player to make the Walker Cup last year and he is doing superbly in his first year as a pro, winning two recent Challenge Tour events.

"He looks almost a certainty to make the full European Tour next year."

The Open takes place from Thursday, with the final of the four rounds being played on Sunday.
