Getting fit for better golf

WORLD-renowned Australian based physiotherapist Ramsay McMaster recently spent two days working with golf professionals Mark Johnson and John Watson.

Styal Professional Johnson played host to Ramsay during a full day of ‘musculoskeletal screenings’ followed by a Fit for Golf seminar.

Several golfers were put through their paces as their bodies were scrutinised under McMaster’s careful eye.

By identifying players’ physical restrictions or weaknesses, quick improvements can be made to swing technique.

Johnson said: "You can guarantee that players’ physical restrictions will show up in their swing.

"To make corrections in the swing the underlying physical faults need to be addressed."

PGA North Region’s John Watson, formerly of the Adlington Driving Range, spent the day with Ramsay and Total Golf Analysis’ Mark Bull to combine the results of 3D Motion Analysis and the physical screenings.

Watson said: "It was fantastic to get the 3D test, see where a player can improve and then have a physical screening and exercise program.

"The effects of the physio have a huge impact on the players swing."

Client Steve Parry added: "I have learnt more about my swing in the last couple of hours than I have in the last couple of years. Now I have a clear picture of what I need to do to progress my game."

McMaster has worked with numerous world stars, including Lee Westwood and Henrik Stenson.

Mark Johnson added: "It has been a privilege working with such a world leader of his field and will hopefully be the start of a long term working relationship."

Johnson and Watson now work with a team of local specialists to compliment their coaching and offer the ultimate performance package.

He will be back in the UK later this year.

Davenport’s men played a BB Stableford and defying difficult conditions to rack up an impressive 45 points were Geoff Hall and Jon Lloyd who won a card play-off from Jim Leonard and Brian Hallworth.

Davenport’s Mixed Pairs played an American Greensome with the top spot going to David and Carol Clapperton and they needed a cpo on 44 points to shake off new members Terry and Pauline Wellerman with Mike Tew and Carol Cooke next in on 43.
