Edge’s ton-up celebrations

ALDERLEY Edge Golf Club has enjoyed a great Centenary Year.

One of the highlights was the presentation of the Cheshire Centenary Plate to Edge Captain Glen Swindell by Richard Palmer, the President of the English Golf Union, at the Cheshire Golf Union dinner at Mere Golf and Country Club.

Edge official Jerry Dixon said: "Other highlights included a new centenary wall complete with plaque and a centenary book was written by myself, with a foreword by Alex Hay, who used to play here during his National Service.

"We had a trick golf show by Noel Hunt, and a Hickory competition, where everyone wore authentic Edwardian golf attire.

"There were our usual Open comps, and a new club comp, the Centenary Trophy, in which gents, ladies and juniors could participate, which was won by Alison Roberts with a nett 66.

"We also had a new Mens competition, the Harold Humphreys Medal.

"Harold was the founder of the Umbro company and a key member of our club in the early days.

"There was a Centenary Ball at the club in July and during the year the Captain’s charity [The Katie Trust] raised exactly £6,000.

"Our Lady Captain this year is Celia Berent, and our President is Lindsey Barnes."

The second Winter Strokeplay over 12 holes saw Jim Thornhill top Division One with 43 from Vaughan Wilcock (44.3).

John Perry was the main man in Division Two with 45 and Bob Quigley led in Division Three on 45 from Peter Green (48).

Styal seniors played a medal and in a tight finish Ed Austin won a cpo on 74 to prevail from George Hutchinson and Gordon Laurence.

A Sunday Stableford at Styal had Simon Poucher leading in with 39 from R Higginbottom (38) and Tom Godfrey (37).

Winter golf is now in full flow and will continue at all clubs until next March.
