NORTHERN Ireland international Peter Thompson was discussing personal terms with Stockport County today after a deal was agreed to bring the hotshot to Edgeley Park.

The 24-year-old forward, nicknamed Pistol Pete, flew over from Belfast after his club Linfield agreed an undisclosed fee with County.

Thompson made a substitute appearance in Linfield's Champion's League qualifier against Dinamo Zagreb on Wednesday night.

He scored 152 goals for the Northern Irish champions in 234 appearances, including 44 goals last season. He has also won seven caps for Northern Ireland so far, scoring against Georgia in March.

Late interest from Norwich City threatened to disrupt the deal but Linfield decided to accept County's bid while rejecting the Canaries' offer.

Linfield manager David Jeffrey said: "Peter has served us phenomenally well from the age of 16. He made it known to me that he felt he was now ready to push ahead."

Meanwhile, County fans will have their first chance to see the Hatters' other summer signings - keeper Owain Fon Williams and right-back Johnny Mullins - in action tomorrow. Jim Gannon aims to use all his first-team squad in the friendly at Cammell Laird, which also marks the Unibond Premier League club's 100th anniversary.

Then on Tuesday night, County make the short trip to Spotland to take on local rivals Rochdale.

The game is a repeat of May's Play-off Final which saw County win promotion to League One with a 3-2 victory over Keith Hill's side.

County have just returned from a four-day Italian training camp at Lake Garda.
