Reserve title secured in Styal

STYAL Reserves claimed the Cheshire Reserve League title on goal difference following a 7-0 victory over Broadheath Reserves

Styal’s first team also have silverware in their sights, and probably need a minimum of one point from their final away game against Woodley, on Monday, to clinch the Cheshire League Division One title.

Last Saturday, Styal beat Woodley 4-1, in their fourth game in eight days.

Despite the heavy legs Styal’s attitude was right and when Woodley had any sight of goal there was always a Styal player to get a foot in or block the ball.

Any forays up the field by Styal lacked the final killer ball and the first Styal goal came from the dirct approach.

Cowles’ goal kick was headed on by Dickenson and Chambers got in behind the Woodley defence to lob the keeper with 25 minutes gone.

Ten minutes later good approach play by Styal ended with Matthews firing home left footed and Styal went in 2-0 up at the break.

The visitors pushed Styal hard in the second half but Styal competed for anything loose with Massey and Dickenson winning the midfield tussle and Scarry and Pownall winning all their headers.

The third goal came midway through the half from Barnes, and Challinor poked home a fourth after a goalmouth scramble.

The visitors replied late on with a consolation as Styal had a rare lapse of concentration.

It now goes to the final game where due to earlier postponements Styal face Woodley again on Monday.
