Misfiring Styal survive late onslaught

2/ 1/2008

STYAL dominated most of their game against Rylands but a failure to take chances left them fighting out a nervous final few minutes.

Styal went 2-0 up in the first half with two similar goals. On both occasions Matthews beat his man and crossed for Thornton to steal in at the far post and finish with his right foot.

Rylands rarely troubled the Styal goal and, with Barnes and Matthews in form, it looked like a matter of time before a third goal would wrap up the game. The most clear-cut chance was put wide by substitute Gavin Smith.

With five minutes to go, a speculative Rylands cross was inadvertently turned home for an own goal by Tueart.

Doubts then set in and some poor decision making by Styal's defenders allowed Rylands a number of late free kicks around the box as they searched for an equaliser.

However, Styal managed to cope with the pressure and held out for a 2-1 victory that should have been more convincing.
