Cup defeat for Styal

Styal started well in their Cheshire Cup match at Stockport Georgians, forcing their keeper into two outstanding early saves.

Gregory saw his shot beat the keeper, but the ball was cleared off the line.

With 10 minutes to go in the first half Styal were rewarded when Brennan gave them the lead.

The second half saw the home team come out all guns blazing, but to little effect until, 20 minutes from the end, Georgians scored a controversial goal that the Styal players felt sure was handball.

With 10 minutes to go Styal’s keeper Aldred was beaten by a deflected shot.

In the closing minutes Styal came close to equalising. McDonnel’s mazy run ended with him firing the ball across the home team’s box but no-one could apply the slightest touch to take the game into extra-time and Styal are now forced to concentrate on the league.

n STYAL reserves took on Rylands for the third time this season and looked to maintain the 100 per cent record against them.

Rylands made the early running and hit a shot against the post.

A Styal set-piece from a corner saw Joe Heywood rise to head home, only for the goal to be disallowed.

Soon after Chris McCormick had hit the post, a fine cross from Ryan Buckley on the left saw a great header from McCormick put Styal in a deserved lead. Heywood headed home Styal’s second before the break.

Mike Filson’s free-kick was turned in for an own goal and Steffan Laffley completed the scoring in an excellent 4-0 win.

STYAL A team were left rueing a 10-minute first-halfspell that allowed Sale side Bridge Inn to score two goals in their cup match.

Si Roberts scored a consolation but Styal lost 2-1.
