Rebels stick to their principles

Stuart Brennan
1/ 7/2008

FC UNITED chief Andy Walsh says the club will not jeopardise its future by trying to compete with the big- spenders in the UniBond League.

The club has already seen star players Rory Patterson, Stuart Rudd and Josh Howard leave after helping to secure a third successive promotion for the Rebels.

But the club's general manager Walsh says that, although the playing budget has been increased for next season to reflect the move up to a higher level, there will be no crazy money paid out.

Well said Ken. Those two muppets post on here with their nonsense all the time, so much so they can only be the type of internet nerds that can't get a girlfriend. You have to be a certain type of saddo to spend THAT amount of time commenting on something you really dislike. FC are not going to go away, there's enough support for the club out there to keep it going for years to come. Sorry Dash & Neil, you must get out more....

Neil has gone very quiet, with his hints of a fraudulent conspiracy up the Swanee. The truth is that every member of FC United has access to details of the club finances, and I have yet to find anyone unhappy. If we have problems with any expenditure, we would bring it up at the agm, not here. Dash Walny's unhealthy obsession with Andy Walsh rears its green-eyed head again. Not content with making an anagram out of Andy's name, he continues with dark hints of wrongdoing and nest-feathering. The simple truth is that Andy took a pay cut to become general manager at FC United - he is a talented lad who could be on twice the salary elsewhere, but is doing it for the love of what he does, something that the likes of Dash and Neil could never understand. I have been to the FC offices, and there is an incredible amount of work to be done, with a fanbase bigger than some league clubs, and a high level of accountability and involvement with that fanbase. Not to mention all the work going into finding and funding a new stadium. As others have said, why the obsession with what we do? You are on the outside looking in, and yet are arrogant enough to believe that you have all the answers and understand the essence of FC United. The fact is you know nowt, and have to rely on scurrilous hints and innuendos that have no bases in truth. Can you - Dash or Neil - come up with ONE fact that proves your theories that something untoward is going on at FC United? Not holding my breath.

Do you mean like when it was going to be over before the first Christmas. Answer me this? Why are you really that bothered? Does it impact on your life that much?

Stad, are you running a football club or a charity outfit? I don't think the limited charity work that FC does would constitute a full-time and full-salaried GM position. This has been my argument all along and was stately plainly by SAF when the club was initially set up in regards to "how big of supporters they actually are." The board/GM of FC United is more in love with themselves then it ever was in love with Manchester United Football Club, and that has not changed. The Glazers told Shareholders United and MUST they would not wield any power they may have once possessed. Hence the egos running those groups formed FC. Wait till you see the atrocious attendance figures for FC this year and this thing can just fold itself up. Hopefully the board can arranged some golden parachutes for themselves when they jump.

TAMWORTH v. FC UNITED pre-match preview. FC United make the trip to Tamworth FC's Lamb Ground on Saturday looking to register their first victory of the pre-season campaign whilst the host will be looking to notch their fourth victory. Craig Phillips provides this preview. Although the Reds have gone down to both Kettering and Altrincham over the past week, manager Karl Marginson won't be too dismayed after the side showed glimpses of what they can do in both fixtures and held their own for large amounts of both matches against teams two tiers above themselves. So next up in Blue Square North side Tamworth, in what should be an entertaining game at the Lamb Ground.

Originally formed in 1933, the team are celebrating their 75th anniversary this season and will be looking to improve on their finish of 15th last term to mark the occasion. The Lambs were formed after the local team; Tamworth Castle FC, folded, leaving a void for a football team in the town of Tamworth. A local businessman set the wheels in motion by sending a letter into the local newspaper and with that Tamworth FC were born.

The club originally played in the Birmingham Combination, then the Birmingham League in the 1950s before being eventually promoted to the Southern League in the early 1970s. The highest the club have reached on the football league pyramid was when they were promoted to the Conference in 2003. The Lambs have had more success in cup competitions; winning the FA Vase in 1989 by beating Sudbruy Town 3-0 in a replay at Peterborough's London Road. The club also reached the FA Trophy in 2003, finding themselves on the wrong end of a 2-1 scoreline against Burscough.

The club reached the third round of the FA Cup in 2006 for the first time in their history and managed to follow that achievement the next season by reaching the third round once more. Past players for the club include former Manchester City players Tony Coton, Gerry Taggart and Nicky Summerbee. In 2006, The Lambs managed to sign former Arsenal and England midfielder Paul Merson. However, Merson only played one game for the club before being dropped to the bench and then subsequently announcing his retirement from the game less than two weeks after joining. The club were relegated to the Conference North in 2007 after finishing 22nd in the Conference. In his first full season in charge current boss Gary Mills led The Lambs to a respectable 15th position but will be looking to make strides to taking The Lambs back to the Conference this term. The club are currently undefeated in their pre-season campaign with three wins against Grestley Rovers (5-2), Institute FC (1-0) and FC Halifax Town (2-0) and last time out they were held to a 0-0 draw away to Eastwood Town.

MATCH REPORT OF LAST NIGHTS GAME FROM FC UNITED: United went down to their second defeat to Blue Square Premier opposition in four days as they were beaten 3-0 by Altrincham at Moss Lane on Tuesday night. Despite the scoreline it was United who began the better and pushed forward early looking to pressurise the Robins' defence with good penetrating runs coming form Adam Carden on the right forcing a couple of early corners. But nothing came of the early pressure and when Altrincham pushed forward they took the lead. Alex Meechan's shot was spilled by Sam Ashton into the path of on-form striker Chris Senior who easily slotted home to put the Robins one up with only seven minutes on the clock. The United side had a different look to the one which took to the field on Saturday and players took time to find their form, for some of them it was their first appearance of the pre-season campaign. Forward Carlos Roca showed glimpses of his ability; against his former club, with a lovely nutmeg and run but United were never troubling the opposition goal in the first half. Having said that the game was fairly even in the first half with both sides fighting well for possession and neither really pushing through and creating any clear-cut chances. After the interval, Margy chose to change several faces, bringing in a few fresh legs and United's performance picked up. There was a zip to the play and real tempo to how the ball was being knocked about and for the first 15 minutes it was hard to separate the teams in terms of ability as United more than held their own. The Reds created good chances with young Danny Allen going close from the edge of the box and Nick Robinson missing a gilt-edged chance when Robins' 'keeper Andy Ralph spilled to him on the edge of the box. However, it always felt like the conference side had the ability to make United pay for those missed chances and they duly did on the hour mark when Senior grabbed his second of the game (and eighth in four pre-season games) with a spectacular control and overhead kick from 12 yards out which left Ashton stranded. Senior had a great chance not long after when he found space in the box and rattled the crossbar with a vicious right footed shot that would have seen him take the match ball home. As the game wore on the Robins' seemed to pull away from United. Whether it was in terms of ability or fitness is a matter of debate but the home team certainly took over in the final 20 minutes. Altrincham sealed the victory with a third goal when defender Gerg Young powerfully headed home with less than 10 minutes on the clock, a goal which Ashton would have again felt he could have done better on. So United were beaten by Conference opposition once more and Margy will have to remind his players that tonight's game was about fitness and testing themselves rather than the result. Next up; Saturday the Reds travel to Tamworth but more importantly the beginning of the season is now less than a month away.

Ok Neil, I'm not exactly sure what figures you are asking for but here is where you can find all the information regarding FC United’s finances. The financial statements to year end 30 June 2007 were issued at last years AGM. They were independently audited by Beever & Struthers Chartered accountants based in Manchester. The document is 20 pages long and includes, amongst other things, the income & expenditure account and balance sheet. This also includes figures from the period 15 July 2005 to 30 June 2006. The next statement for year end 30 June 2008 will be made available to member at the next AGM later on this year (unlike Red Footballs accounts which will be hidden away until April 2009). If you are really interested and want to read the contents of the Financial Statements then you should take out FC United membership and you will be given access to the accounts and entitled to attend next years AGM where you can ask the Board questions in person. You will be pleased to know that FC United has a healthy, in the black, balance sheet of well over five figures in the bank. I trust this is all the info you need to do your homework and find what you are looking for.

Due to the size of FC Uniteds fan base and community work, the post of General Manager is a full time post. This being a democratic club owned and run by the fans means that if the fans were not comfortable with that situation it would not prevail. Now Dash go and get a life and stop making petty comments about the running of a club which you clearly have no intention of understanding.

Due the principles included paying their GM the highest salary in the Unibond and higher than any GM around non-league?? Or is that off-limits for discussion?

Directions: By Car: TRAVELLING FROM THE EAST ON M62: At junction 18 of the M62 the motorway changes its name to the M60. After passing Birch Service Station get into the inside lane. Follow the sign which reads M60 (East and South), Manchester and Airport. Follow the left filter lane to join the M60 motorway travelling in a clockwise direction. Continue to follow signs for Manchester Airport and at junction 3 of the M60 get into the inside two lanes and leave the M60 to join the M56. At junction 2 of the M56 do not follow the Altrincham sign but remain on the M56 following signs for the Airport. Do not leave the M56 at Manchester Airport but continue until junction 6. Leave the M56 at junction 6 signposted A538 Wilmslow, Hale, Macclesfield. At the end of the slip road turn left at the traffic lights signposted Hale, Altrincham A538. Go straight across at the next roundabout. After approximately 2 miles approach a set of traffic lights – carry straight on and take the third turning on the right into Westminster Road. Carry straight on for approximately 3/4 mile into Moss Lane, the football ground is on the right.

TRAVELLING FROM THE NORTH ON M6: Leave M6 motorway at junction 20 to join M56. Leave M56 at junction 7 and at roundabout take A56 for Altrincham. At first traffic lights (1 mile) turn right for Bowdon/Hale (B5161). Carry on for 1 mile, passing The Quality Hotel on the right. Go through the traffic lights, then right at the mini roundabout into Hale Road (avoiding town centre). Carry on for approximately 1 mile, turning left into Westminster Road (opposite cemetry entrance). Carry straight on for approximately 3/4 mile into Moss Lane, the football ground is on the right.

TRAVELLING FROM THE WEST ON M62: Leave the M62 at Junction 10 and join the M6 travelling in a southerly direction. Then follow the directions as from the North as above.

TRAVELLING FROM THE SOUTH ON M6: Leave M6 motorway at junction 19 (Manchester and Airport sign). Join A556 and follow Airport signs to M56. Do NOT take the M56 but carry straight on at roundabout on A56.

On Foot: From the front of Altrincham Interchange (for buses, trains and Metrolink trams), which lies behind the clock tower (pictured right), Moss Lane is the first turning on the left. Since 3 November 2002 Moss Lane has been made one-way at the town centre end so there is now no vehicle access from the A538 main road (Railway Street/Stamford New Road) which runs through Altrincham. Vehicles must either follow the road route above or carry on southwards past Moss Lane a quarter of a mile, passing Altrincham Post Office (on right), and then turn left at the next set of proper traffic lights into Lloyd Street. After crossing the railway bridge, with Tesco on the left, turn first left (Manor Road) and proceed to the second set of two very closely sited traffic lights, where you turn right into Moss Lane. The ground is half a mile away on left, in front of a tall communications pylon, which can be seen from some distance away.

Pedestrians can still turn up Moss Lane from the town centre (A538) and go over the railway bridge, after which there is a large Tesco on the right. Go straight on at cross roads and the ground is half a mile along Moss Lane on the left.

Buses: 16 / 41 / 263 / 264 run from Manchester Piccadilly bus station to Altrincham Interchange, (immediately outside the Metrolink station).

Metrolink: The metrolink line to Altrincham should be back running from 28th August. You need to check this service before they travel.
