AFTER 33 years of waiting, Alderley Edge are champions of the Cheshire County Cricket League.
When Saturday’s key game with second-placed Bowdon fell victim to the rain, Edge’s 36-point lead at the top of the table meant they had completed an historic Twenty20 cup and league double, the first team to do so since the cup was changed to the shorter format four years ago.
It was a proud moment for the Edge players when it was clear that torrential rain had left the Moss Lane ground unplayable and, for many of the players, who have never played at another club, it was the culmination of a lifelong county title dream with Alderley.
Since the ECB Cheshire Premier League structure was set up 10 years ago, Edge have never looked liked taking the title, but there was no arguing with the statistics this time.
With one game remaining, Edge boast the most wins, equal fewest defeats and sufficient points to win the title.
This achievement has been earned by consistent performances from all the squad who have played their part in the title triumph, with the players being well led by skipper Mark Walker. Off the field, it is a just reward for all the hard work, over many years, by Clive Elliott in his last season as cricket chairman.
Edge hope to celebrate in style at Moss Lane next Saturday when they play the already relegated Heaton Mersey, and they will receive the ECB Cheshire Premier League trophy to close an historic season for all those involved.
