Styal's low-scoring loss
23/ 4/2008
STYAL claimed their first win of the new season, winning a low-scoring game against Rylands.
Losing the toss, Styal batted first and Brian Middleton made a fine 21 before falling to a turning low ball almost impossible to defend. New boy Neil Pennington was the only other top-order batsman to get in but the lower order of Andy Jackson 10, Steve Shawcross 13, and John Saxon 15, used up the overs to push the score to 107.
Rylands’ opening pair looked to be cruising to victory with no early wicket falling.
However, Mo Baig removed them and, assisted by spin from Jim Harrison and wicket to wicket bowling by Steve Vose, Styal decimated Rylands’ middle order with four ducks in quick succession.
Though low on confidence, Rylands’ experienced pair of Kevin Addison and Sean Malone held their nerve to reach 110-8.
Should less emphasis be placed on the results of tests and more emphasis on general education for children?
