Cheshire’s Halstead earns place

12/12/2007

WOMEN’S CRICKET: Cheshire women’s leading light, 20-year-old Jenny Halstead, is one of five women named in the 18-strong MCC Young Cricketers squad for 2008.

This squad of the country’s best young talent will, in the words of an MCC spokesperson, ‘live, sleep and breathe cricket at Lord’s next season’.

England fringe player Halstead now becomes the second player nurtured by Poynton Cricket Club’s youth system to make the Young Cricketers’ squad, following Mark Currie in 1999.

The Cheshire Women’s League has voted to accept Romiley as its 10th senior member club for the new season.

Meanwhile, the growth in junior girls’ cricket in Cheshire continues, with 12 clubs in the county expected to run girls teams in 2008, including four from the Stockport area - Bredbury St Mark’s, Compstall, High Lane and Marple.

Romiley will join forces with neighbours Bredbury St Mark’s to play as a joint team, to be known as Werneth Ladies, in the league’s second division, but separate Bredbury and Romiley teams will play in both cup competitions.

The others are Appleton, Denton West, Elworth, Hyde, Neston, Northwich, Middlewich and Wistaston.
