Promotion for Wayfarers

A CATCH from Roger Westbrook-Eden sealed Wayfarers’ return to Cheshire Cricket Alliance Division One.

The Wilmslow side batted first, needing nine points from their game at Ellesmere Port to confirm promotion.

Akhtar fell for a duck with Wayfarers on eight before Ed Homer came in for his last innings for the club before he moves to Finland.

The batsmen were struggling to come to terms with the wicket.

Hassard (24) succumbed to a ball that stopped on him as Wayfarers started to wobble at 33-3.

Skipper Joel Unsworth came in and went about his usual business, and Homer opened an attack of his own before falling for 20.

Luke Unsworth joined his brother at the crease and they took the side to 83-5. Wayfarers made it to 147-9 when an exquisite extra cover drive from Bhamjee sealed the eight batting points.

Wayfarers finished on 162 all out.

For Port, Welsh was the pick of the bowlers, returning five for 66.

Needing just one wicket to claim the ninth point, Wilmslow were home and dry when, in the fifth over, Andrew Bruce removed Brimble.

With promotion confirmed, Unsworth used eight bowlers to look at attacking options for next season.

Eden, Bhamjee and Akhtar picked up a wicket apiece along with Bruce (two for 25) and Joel Unsworth (three for 33).

Ellesmere Port claimed the win with two wickets in hand, but Wayfarers’ job had been done.
