Rylands 140-7, Wilmslow Wayfarers 141-4 (Wayfarers win by six wickets)
RYLANDS made their first trip to the Oakwood Farm Oval in the knowledge that realistically only a 25-point victory would keep them in the hunt for promotion.
Batting first, Rylands’ Malone and Knowles Snr strode to the crease knowing that a solid platform was the order of the day. However, after making a nervous start, Baldwin carried on where he left off last week versus Trinity as he castled Knowles for 11. This brought skipper and premier batsman Dale to the crease.
Accurate bowling by the ever-reliable Baldwin and captain Unsworth meant the away team struggled around the two-an-over mark. Eventually Baldwin dismissed Malone (21) and Mason soon followed him back as Baldwin’s third victim (41-3). A period of dormant batting from Dale and Platt ensued as the pair struggled to score.
At the 30-over mark, Rylands were 64-3 and, with the batsmen showing an intention to raise the run rate they made it to 85-3. The introduction of the Sikh off-spinner Yousuf Bhamjee paid immediate dividends. He finished with four wickets and the away side were left reeling at 116-7, eventually posting a below-par 140-7 off their allotted overs.
Hassard and the returning Akhtar opened the Wayfarers reply and got off to a steady start. With the score reaching 72-3, Unsworth joined Hassard at the crease for a game-breaking partnership of 42 off 30 balls.
After Malone dismissed the skipper for 28, Hassard (61 not out) and Bennett finished the job and extinguished Rylands’ promotion challenge.
