Battle of the Somme

IT IS the 90th anniversary of one of the most infamous battles in British military history. On the Somme in France, there were 60,000 casualties in a single day - July 1 1916. Every community was touched by the battle, including Macclesfield. Here, reporter JAMES CRISP looks at the role Maxonians played in a battle which ultimately led to the death of 500,000 British and Commonwealth soldiers.
