Woman hit with shock bill after 15 hours locked up

A WOMAN locked up for shoplifting after a ‘slip-up’ at Tesco, Handforth Dean, was then hit with a shock demand for compensation.
Annette Tuite was held overnight in a cell before police accepted there was no evidence she had stolen £16.98 worth of make up from the store.
Mrs Tuite of Cheadle insisted she had put the make up on top of her handbag in her trolley and that it had accidentally fallen in.
But despite accepting there was no CCTV evidence she had stolen it, and no criminal charges, Tesco then demanded £137.50 in civil damages. The demand was to cover the cost of staff and management time and security, surveillance and administration costs. Tesco have now agreed to drop the demand, but insist civil claims are ‘pretty routine if police are involved.’
Mrs Tuite was in Tesco with husband Peter and daughter Victoria, where they spent £117 on their weekly shop, before being stopped by security staff.
Peter said: "I’m quite happy Tesco have seen sense. The very least we would have expected from them was an apology."
Cheshire police say they will look into why Mrs Tuite was kept in a cell for 15 hours.
