Terry joins Romany fans

ONE of Britain’s smallest tourist attractions opened its doors in glorious sunshine with Terry Waite looking on at the weekend.

Members of the Romany Society gathered in Wilmslow for their annual meeting and to formally open the vardo, or gipsy caravan once owned by the Reverend George Bramwell Evens, Britain's first broadcasting naturalist.

Mr Evens, known to thousands of radio listeners as Romany of the BBC - was a popular figure on Children’s Hour in the 1930s and 40s. The Romany Society was set up to promote and encourage the appreciation of his work. It has 300 members across the country.

Among the guests was Terry Waite, the society’s patron.

Les Horton, the Romany Society’s chairman, said: "It was a wonderful day and it was very nice to see Terry, who is a very active patron of the society. We want to keep Romany's memory alive because he was a remarkable man."

Romany was born in 1884, son of a true gypsy. He grew up to become a Methodist minister and wrote about wildlife and the countryside for many years.

He was the forerunner and inspiration for David Attenborough and David Bellamy.
