Postal strike called off

A PLANNED strike by Royal Mail staff over the proposed relocation of Alderley Edge’s sorting office has been called off.

Staff at the village’s sorting office were due to strike on Christmas Eve. But the Communication Workers Union said postal workers had decided to hold off but could still strike after Christmas.

Dave Kennedy said: “The postal staff have talked between themselves and have decided that they do not want to upset customers over the busy Christmas period when they rely on their mail being delivered on time to friends and relatives.

“But it does not mean that there won’t be any strike action in the New Year. I can understand their reasons behind calling off the strike.”

Staff voted for industial action because Royal Mail wants to close the sorting office, sell the building and transfer staff to Wilmslow. It claims it is “not fit for purpose”.

It proposes to transfer all 15 staff to Wilmslow sorting office in January.

A Royal Mail spokesman said: “We are very pleased that the strike has been called off and staff will be working as usual on Christmas Eve.”
