‘Don’t sound last post’

A HUGE crowd of protesters joined schoolboy Max Eden outside Fulshaw post office on Friday in a last ditch attempt to save the service.

For the last six weeks, Max, 14, has been busily campaigning against the closure of the post office and has steadily built up strong support from the local community, including that of Tatton MP George Osborne.

Max, who originally told everyone he was 19 because he was worried he wouldn’t be taken seriously, said: "It’s brilliant. I am so happy with the amount of people here."

On Friday, December 14, just days before the consultation deadline, over 80 people turned out to meet Shadow Chancellor George Osborne and show their support for Max.

Mr Osborne said: "I think it’s fantastic. I think Max has done really well to get 2000 signatures. It just goes to show how much the community really cares about the local post office."

"I can help the community to make a strong case to the Government.

"They’ve given us a consultation period and if they really mean what they say they will have to listen."

The Post Office Ltd has confirmed that if public demonstration is strong enough they will reconsider saving a post office earmarked for closure.

Shortly after the public meeting, Max, who lives next door to the post office in Chapel Lane, sent more that 2000 signatures to Jane Briginshaw, Post Office Ltd’s network development manager for the North West.

He said: "I’ve got over 2000 signatures and more are coming in all the time. I am going to send them all to the Post office.

"We’ll just have to wait and see what happens."

The St Ambrose student has been tirelessly campaigning to save the Fulshaw post office since it was announced that it was under threat of closure on Tuesday, November 10.

Within an hour of hearing the announcement, he had printed off 200 copies of the petition and begun delivering them throughout the neighbourhood.

He has now collected more than the required 2000 signatures and countless letters of support from members of the community.

whilst I fully agree we should keep our local post office and amenities...I should point out that Max Eden lives next door... his father David also owns the Post office and all that row of shops and flats above...I feel he has a vested interest other than to save the Post Office and should stand back now on this ocassion.. Good luck to Bob who runs the post office and his staff...
