Police pledge to tackle out of town nuisance

YOUTHS from out of town are making Wilmslow a no go area at night, say concerned residents.

But police guarantee a frosty reception for those intent on causing a nuisance in the town in this winter.

A concerned resident told Wilmslow’s Police Forum some people were reluctant to come into the town centre at night due to nuisance youths, many from outside the area.

He called on police to take action by targeting licensed premises.

Wilmslow Neighbourhood Police Inspector, Luke McDonnell admitted that policing Wilmslow at night is a challenge.

But he said police, Trading Standards, Macclesfield Borough Council and Wilmslow’s pub watch members were all tackling it together.

He said: "One of the challenges we face in Wilmslow is the night time activity. It is particularly in Wilmslow and not Alderley Edge, where we have people coming into the area from outside."

He said policing rotas had been changed in response to 24 hour drinking legislation, and many pubs and bars in the area were working closely with police through the pubwatch scheme, to counter nuisance behaviour.

Extra policing teams from the Vectra unit have also been drafted in to the town centre in the run up to Christmas, alongside a combination of covert and high visibility operations.

A team of taxi marshalls has also been set upto usher people through Wilmslow and get them transported home as quickly and safely as possible, to stop them hanging around the town centre.

He told the meeting that they have also been working with Trading Standards Officers, carrying out test purchases at venues across Wilmslow.

It comes as the Home Office launches a scheme to force problem drinkers to attend counselling sessions if they are arrested on a drink related charge.

And those deemed to have more deep rooted problems with alcohol could be referred for therapy to examine their behaviour in depth.

Cheshire is one four forces in the country to pilot the Alcohol Arrest Referral Projects until March next year.

Home Secretary Jacqui Smith said: "We are determined to break the link between drunkenness and anti-social behaviour. People need to face up to the damage that excessive drinking can do to themselves and those around them.

"These pilots will complement powers already available to the police to tackle alcohol related disorder, including on-the-spot fines, confiscating alcohol in public places and closing down premises that flout the law. I look forward to seeing the first assessments of the projects in spring next year."

Why is it after fighting for taxis to park in the ranks designed for them earlier this year, that I am now kept awake at night because the police seem incapable of enforcing taxi drivers to park in the correct places. Surely if the taxis ranked in the designated places where they are supposed to be instead of congrigating outside my apartment on Green Lane and causing people to hang around waiting until one arrives causing a disturbance, then this would help solve some of the problem. Having already spoken to several drivers and been abused by some they tell me that Inspector Luke McDonnald has told them not to bother with the ranks and to park up where the people are???

I am not sure how he would react if he was kept awake at least 5 nights out of 7 by diesel engines running, doors slamming and drivers stood about laughing and joking for hours on end!!!!
