My Gt Grandfather from Dublin, Joseph Niland, served with 179 Tunnelling Company, RE. This unit exploded the mines that signalled the start of the Somme offensive. KIA March 1917.
My Gt Grandfather from Wheelock/Macclesfield, John Shepley, also served with the Royal Engineers. Died in Macc in 1943 from the wounds he received in Nov 1918. His brother James served with the Grenadier Guards and was KIA in 1915.
What a tragic waste of life.
