600 face court for feet

Paul Britton
5/ 9/2007

SIX-hundred more people are to appear in court in a train company's crackdown on passengers putting their feet on seats.

The M.E.N. revealed on Monday that student Kathleen Jennings, 19, was being brought before the bench after being caught by the ban.

Yes Ace we need public floggings and executions to stop the terrible crime of putting feet up to protect innocent chairs!

What liberal run society? Im still waiting for the Labour party to turn up, as it is we still have the Conservative Party light.

Birdy, you know damn well when i compared this to a speeding conviction, i was talking about being warned, ignoring this then getting prosecuted. I wasn't saying it was like for like crimes, even an idiot would understand that. As far as saying it's not important, when you sit down, only to get you clothes dirty from people putting their feet on the seats despite warnings via signs and the tannoy, you have to face the music. The train company has already said, they are not allowed to legally issue fixed penalty notices for this and so because of the law, are left with no other option than to go to court. It's a big problem for them, along with several other issues. The general public expect 1 man on a train to deal with tickets, stop people causing trouble, making sure everyone is safe, stop people from drinking alcohol on board and keep feet of the seats to keep them clean. Not easy when the second they walk away, most carry on doing it, much to the annoyence of other passengers. There is no other option but to take them to court. The law doesn't allow them to issue fixed penalty notices for this and not only has this been made clear, but the 'as usual' idiot magistrate should have known this.

Andrew i think its time you put things in perspective. The day that someone ends up in court for putting their feet up on the seat on a train is a sad day for common sense. Comparing it to speeding, which endangers lives, is ridiculous. At most she endangered fabric.

Should people put their feet on seats, no. Should it be an offence that lands you in court? No. I'd like to see you take the moral high gorund if it was your son or daughter who ended up with a criminal record over such a thing. Train companies can issue fines for people with no tickets, so i'm sure they be better off spending their time working on making it possible to fine people for putting their feet on seats, because hauling 850 people (to date) to court over such a trivial matter is crazy.

And for people saying that this behaviour signifies a moral decline, no, it doesnt. Stabbing someone does, mugging someone does, putting your feet on a seat does not

I know what you mean but if they didn't stamp on things they would get out of control due to human nature. Take for instance telephone box smashing. I come from the generation that started it the 1960s. It was a laugh. I was lucky enough to get caught, got taken to court, stamped on by my dad and never did it again.

Catcher I disagree. Britian always had bone ilde people, you just hear about them alot more now.

My point about all this is telephone boxes where I live are all smashed, no one will be caught for this and if they do they dont go to court. Yet put your feet up after a hard days work and oops you have the law come down on you like a ton of bricks!

La La Scarborough, she was asked like all the others, not to put their feet up on the seats via tannoy and notices. She then did it anyway and cried when details were taken. It's like me being warned via the media and street signs not to speed, then when i do it anyway and get prosecuted as an officer pulls me over, i then burst into tears asking him not to prosecute. It's too late. I know not all Police officers prosecute motorists, but one man on a train who has to deal with tickets as well as the safety of passengers and uphold rules and regulations has his hands full. That's why they must nip it in the bud. In most cases, as soon as they warn someone and walk away, they do it again. They don't know the individual from Adam and so must treat everyone the same. They say they are not legally allowed ti issue fixed penalty notices and so there is no other option for them, other than the courts. That's not their fault, it's the law. I think it's time the girl grew up and realised her responsibilities for her actions. Take it on the chin and don't do it again!

come-on-city: it's all relative. Britain was great when I was a kid. It's not now. Full of bone idle, dishonest scumbags. I wish I could leave, but I can't.

Catcher, I immigrated too here. I like it.

Its people like you and Ace that seem to hate it so much.

And as for Mike, yes I know world history. But the studies were based on quality of life now, not who they benefited off.

With the current attitute of young people it is no longer advisable for a single company official to repremand groups of youths as we often see the consquence of such action from numerous cases of people often who get stabbed, shot or kicked to death just for questioning their actions. Therefore the current situation has led to this, whilst most people reading the article immediately assumes this is buraucrisy gone mad. Without making any reference to the girl in question- One should consider would oneself ask a group of youths to remove their feet from a chair so they can sit down with so many of them carrying knifes and attitude to others no matter of what age gender or race is often so vile.
