Blame for our lack of facilities lies firmly with the borough council

Vic Barlow

I WAS intrigued by the latest building development along Star Lane and London Road.

Considering Macclesfield's rapidly diminishing land bank I assumed it would be a last gasp attempt to provide much needed family leisure facilities or maybe even a cinema?

How wrong I was. It appears the town's most pressing priority is a car showroom.

There may be Skoda, Vauxhall, Nissan, Mercedes, Hyundai, Honda, showrooms no more than a flat tyre away but an Audi dealership there is not. All will be rectified shortly.

Come the school holidays when parents across the UK take their children to dry ski slopes, skating rinks or to see the latest Disney blockbuster, Macclesfield's kids will enjoy the delights of vorsprung durch technik.

How Lyme Green - an open plan development area with lots of parking, crying out for family/leisure facilities - has ended up the epicentre of automotive distribution is a tribute to the foresight and acumen of Macclesfield Borough Council.

It's not easy to squander the only remaining open development land in town... it takes fortitude and incompetence to do that.

Long after the demise of MBC parents will point to car showrooms and say to their children: "Had it not been for the genius of your council there would be a six screen state-of-the-art multiplex where that Audi dealership now stands."

It's good for kids to appreciate the lasting contribution made by council members.

Take the town centre: who else would have thought to turn a honourable old market town into an obscene alcoholic free-for-all? Macclesfield Borough Council that's who.

Sometimes you have to give credit where credit is due.

It was only a fgew months ago since the Council said there was no traffic parking problem in Winterton Way. Has anyone tried to negotiate Winterton Way recently to the Lyme Park site. The parking is horrendous ands all down to the garages at the Winterton House end.

The Council do not see any problem. Perhaps they have never visited or they would know that there is a big problem. BUT will they listen to Vic?
