Dinner tables turned on me

I WAS booked to do the after dinner speech for East Cheshire Sub Aqua Club last Saturday. Instead of taking the mickey out of the members they did it to me.

The chairman made a big point of handing me a drink accompanied by a note on House of Commons notepaper. The handwriting was such that had it not been for the intervention of a chemist well versed in the deciphering of illegible scribble I would not have known it was a note from Sir Nick.

He was incensed at my constant reference to his frugality and said the drink was on him and should put paid to my 'misrepresentation'.

I was genuinely touched until I overheard the chairman admit he'd paid for the drink out of his own pocket.

I should have known.
