A big pay-off for the bosses

WITH psychiatric patients worried senseless about the closure of yet more beds, pregnant mums terrified of losing maternity and paediatric wards, doctors and consultants warning of deaths from the loss of A&E facilities you may be interested to know how NHS senior management are handling the crisis.

Chris Appleby, who became chief executive of Pennine Acute Hospitals Trust less than four years ago, is leaving after a vote of no confidence with doctors and consultants voicing concern over 'patient care'.

So how do a cash-strapped health service deal with this situation? - by offering him a payout of £475k. That's what they call 'making it better'.

While Mr Appleby has no connection with East Cheshire you may recall Macclesfield General suspending one of their top consultants for three years on full pay before agreeing a 'settlement deal'.

How many beds would the £400k paid out to Gavin Denton have saved?

So, let's not forget that while senior NHS managers are quite prepared to consider evicting the mentally ill, firing staff, closing wards and putting lives at risk, they are not prepared to forego a huge payout in the event of a 'no confidence' verdict.

Patients take the risk but management take the cash.

It's a simple formula and one you may like to raise at the next East Cheshire Primary Care Trust meeting.

It would be good to know how they stand on this issue.

With all the talk of closures in hopsital departments, one thing seems to have been forgotten. Much of the equipment has been paid for by public donation; MAST Appeal, neonatal service charity collections etc. How do the health authority justify removing equipment and services that have been paid for by the people of Macclesfield?
