Politician or thief – I know who I trust

Vic Barlow
22/ 3/2006

I READ with interest the story of the thief who returned the charity boxes he stole refilled with his own money. He was apparently full of remorse and felt compelled to make amends.

I couldn't help but wonder if this act of contrition might encourage others to do likewise starting with Macclesfield Borough Council.

It would be rather nice to think all those folks whose rubbish lies uncollected might get an apology and a portion of their council tax returned.

How about a little something back from Cheshire Police to make amends for all those times they had 'no officers available' and what about the mobile phone companies? How many times have you been cut off mid-conversation. Surely they owe us more than a few quid?

When it comes to central government I'm not sure where they would begin:

"Please find enclosed our refund of £1,000 for all your money we lost with the Dome plus £500 for the botched up CSA computers, along with £300 for the helicopters we bought that couldn't fly, the guns that didn't work and some other stuff we haven't told you about yet.

"We are terribly sorry about the horrendous mess we made in Iraq and promise to straighten it all up and pay back your money over the next 50 years."

When it comes to a charity thief or a politician I know who I trust.

Plenty of people raising issues AND working to solve them. All Vic does is whinge. If he has so many answers, why doesn't he put his money where his mouth is and stand for the council. Then he can actually put into practice the things he says rather than just standing on the sidelines. There are many people working in and for their communities trying to make things better instead of just criticising the whole time and talking the town down. I have friends and colleagues who, when I have shown them this man's constant whinging, have said what a poor impression it gives of our town.

He should really put his money where his mouth is and stand for office.
