Barlow's brief
I will if Sheila will

"USE maternity unit or we could lose it" - do you like that headline? It accompanied a letter from Sheila Ryan chair/person/woman of the Maternity Services Liaison Committee. It's straight to the point... we have a great maternity unit so use it.
Normally I'd have read the letter and thought no more about it but sometimes you have to stand up and be counted. Not much point being a campaigning journalist if I skip-read important letters.
With Macclesfield Hospital under threat and every department concerned about closure it behoves me to act. Sometimes I too must make a sacrifice for the good of the community.
I've thought long and hard about this and I really don't want the maternity unit to close down through lack of use. What's clearly needed is more babies, it's as simple as that.
So, Sheila.... I'm willing if you are.

Got an opinion you want to share?
I think this is just an excuse to try and close a unit that is dramatically underfunded - they know it needs more money but don't want to spend it, so are trying to sell us a lemon instead.
Suggestions that someone in labour should be expected to make their way to Leighton Hospital instead are just incredulous. When I went into labour it was very quick and very intense. I had to travel from Congleton to Macclesfield whilst having severe contractions every 5 minutes...to have had to travel any further would have been stressful for both me and my baby.
The proposals to close Macclesfield's maternity unit are not only ludicrous they are also, in my opinion, highly irresponsible.
Let's not let them get away with it...keep the pressure on..!!
