There was a time when kids had some bottle

THERE’S something about the whole recycling movement that makes me feel uneasy.
How can it be sensible for the council to cancel the collection of large household items? Where do you suppose they’ll end up?
Visit Danegate tip and you’ll find a bank of CCTV cameras of sufficient quality to detect a can lid in a bottle bank, yet evidence provided by town centre cameras is often ‘too grainy’ for positive identification. It doesn’t add up.
Years ago we had a fantastic recycling system for bottles. Every kid in the land collected them. Pop bottles, beer bottles, you name it they found them, and returned them to a shop for a small refund. It was probably the most efficient glass recycling system in the world: millions of school kids scouring the streets for discarded bottles.
So, if we are serious, why not reintroduce it? I’m sure our cash rich supermarkets could be persuaded to have a returns counter. There are plenty of penalties, threats and bullying in the current recycling programme, but very few incentives.
