Shadow elections were a bit dull

Vic Barlow

SO, DID you cast your vote at the local elections? It was a mite confusing don’t you think? Initially I thought I was voting to elect ONE councillor; then I understood I could vote for THREE but if I voted for TWO it might negate my ballot paper but it didn’t, so I could. It was all a bit bizarre.

I know my current councillor( Tory) and was happy to vote for her. Steve Carter (Labour) stood in my ward and he’s no push over so I voted for him. As for the rest, they could have been Martians for all I knew. Conservative and Labour did at least stick leaflets through my letterbox, the Lib Dems, true to form, did absolutely nothing. There was the obligatory Green party member, some bloke with a posh name together with a random pick and mix.

Reading the literature every candidate sounded the same. School governor, magistrate, three years on the council, rides a bike, makes all his own frocks yadda, yadda, yadda.

It was all a bit dull. Where was our Red Ken, Big Cyril or the Monster Raving Loony Party? (Come to think of it, where was Sir Nick?) The nearest I came to excitement was when my pencil broke in the polling booth. Surely we can do better than this?

I mentioned 'Red Ken', Epsilon, because Vic himself had mentioned him. In the sense of a big character, not in the sense of his political leanings.

As for A Resident, my response is anything but unhinged. It results from the geography and the demographics of what constitutes 'Macclesfield' - those who live in the town DO NOT have their voice heard.

My reasons for 'not standing' would probably be the same as Vic's if he were pushed to elaborate (and I gave those reasons last time). And as for 'all mouth', what exactly do you think Vic is?

In fact, you could say that anyone who comments on this forum - including you - are 'all mouth'.
