Charges drive custom away

Vic Barlow

WITH a whopping 25 per cent rise in some car park charges and an army of traffic wardens about to take to the streets, plus swingeing fines for offenders, town centre shopping is in terminal decline.

How many shoppers will run the gauntlet when they can park at Handforth Dean, John Lewis or the Trafford Centre with no hassle whatsoever? What’s so special about town that they need to risk getting a ticket? Tesco worked it out years ago. Free parking equals busy shops.

Places like the Trafford Centre have decent shops, are sheltered from the vile weather we have in this country and are open late at night. Macclesfield Town Centre is abit like the football club - no one is interested.

We have more card and charity shops than the TC.
