Traffic restrictions are killing trade

Vic Barlow
12/ 3/2008

WHAT’S happening in our town centres? Unless there’s an urgent plan, they are in terminal decline. Out-of-town superstores continue to expand while town centre retailers close on a weekly basis.

The writing is surely on the wall when McDonald’s can’t make their town centre stores viable.

It is not only the Council who know sod all about the value of free parking.

I have to agree with the satisfied customer again people do not shop in Macc because of the parking restrictions they choose not to shop in Macc because of the limited range of shops on offfer. This is not a problem unique to Macclesfield. I live in Sydney which for an International city has a feeble array of shops meaning that I have to travel to Hong Kong or Singapore if I need to do a big shop.

It is far more likely that it is the low prices, range and diversity of out-of-town superstores that attract shoppers, not the free parking, which is incidental.

Besides, to hear the way some folks here say it - you can park anywhere you like in Macc's town centre and not have to pay a penny...

Lets be realistic. I agree with SW. If you want to shop and live in Macc you go to Manchester. Fact. Same applies to most people in the North of England. Macc is good for charity shops and ropey furniture/jewellery/bric a brac type places, that will never change. If Vic can point back to a specific time when retailing was any good in Macc i may believe him but as usual he didnt. just his usual grumbling. why he has that smile on his photo is beyond me, a weather beaten frown would be more appropriate.

I think you meant alluding and most of what you say goes over people's heads because it makes little, if any, sense.

The basic economics of trade are shown in the out of town shopping centers, where free parking attracts the customers. The Council seem to have retained their tunnel vision, as usual.

A person with a brain could see that im illuding to the fact that we have no shops worth visiting.

Im sorry that this went over your head.

Slinky the subject is obviously too difficult for your comprehension.

In simple English as the title says "Traffic restrictions are killing trade". Very simple and so very true.

The Council are not killing off trade. They are murdering it. Still whenh the wardens commence they will be able to finance free parking in the car park from the illegal free parking on the street.

BUT the Council are very short sighted in their policy. Attract visitors with free parking. It is the all day parkers you need to get rid of.
