PREVIEW: Tenacious D
by David Sue8/12/2006
SOME may argue that there's no room for comedy in music but when
Hollywood actor Jack Black gets involved, certain allowances can be
made.
Jack Black - he of movies such as High Fidelity, School Of Rock and
King Kong - is a funny man.
A very funny man ... he even made the yawn fest that was King Kong
a little bit more bearable.
Hence, why, for the first time since probably Spinal Tap, Black has
made a genuinely decent stab at combining music and laughter (we're
not including The Darkness in this - they were just
laughable).
Moreover, with Tenacious D, Black has taken the whole rock/comedy
schtick a whole lot further by making records you actually want to
buy and gigs you want to attend.
Avoiding the po-faced approach of film stars who dabble in music
(Juliette Lewis, erm, Keanu Reeves), Tenacious D's best asset is
that everyone is in on the joke and a great big toilet-based joke
it is, too.
Schoolboy humour, sordid profanities, very un-PC jibes all get
thrown into the Tenacious D mix, combined with remarkable music
(prog folk? operatic heavy metal?), which would stand alone even
without the comedy angle.
Of course, the album, the tour, etc, are only an aperitif to the
Tenacious D main course, that being the full-length film Tenacious
D In The Pick Of Destiny, which was released in cinemas last
week.
We may be laughing but fair play to Jack Black. He's surely the one
laughing loudest - all the way to the bank.
Tenacious D play the MEN Arena on Tuesday.
