MANCHESTER'S rich links with Chinese culture receive a boost next week when Vital 06: International Chinese Live Art Festival comes to the city.

The Chinese Arts Centre in Thomas Street is the pivotal point for a vibrant programme of live art performances, film screenings and artists' talks by 14 internationally renowned artists, including He Yun Chang, He Chengyao and Dai Guang Yu all from China, Patty Chang from America, Leung Po-Shan from Hong Kong, Lee Wen from Singapore and UK-based artists Mad for Real.

As Sarah Champion, the centre's chief executive officer, explained: "The artists selected all represent the very best in the world but their work also tries to directly connect to the audience for an extremely memorable experience."

Performances will take place at the centre, at Urbis and on the streets throughout a four-day period starting Thursday and finishing on Sunday.
