Jack's back to entertain

CROONER Jack Jones needs no introduction among his legions of
fans. And those who are not familiar with the name will definitely
recognise some of the hits.
The 68-year-old American (right) recorded the theme for 80s TV
classic The Love Boat and also The Impossible Dream, currently
backing music for the latest clever Honda advert. But those are
only among the highlights of a glittering career that has spanned
50 years, 50 albums and countless performances around the world. He
plays the Bridgewater Hall with his big band this Sunday.
"The Bridgewater is really great, one of my all time favourite
halls," he says. "I suppose it's just the position of the stage in
relation to the audience - it's wonderful for performing. I've been
playing Manchester since the early days, back then it was the
Golden Garter Club (Wythenshawe), and I'm always given a fantastic
reception."
Jones is the classic Vegas lounge singer and takes to the stage in
a tux' with his mane of snow-white hair to sing numbers such as The
Race Is On, Call Me Irresponsible and What I Did for Love.
He is now also one of the most technically accomplished vocalists
of his style. "In the beginning I didn't have much of a low range
but as my voice has worn in it's got more interesting," he says.
"It's more varied and has more colours now.
"When I was first singing I had to work to hit the notes but now I
don't have to worry about it, I know it's going to be there.
"One of the best compliments I've had was from a vocal coach who
said I'm used as an example to students, it sounds a bit
self-aggrandizing but it meant a lot."
The Bridgewater Hall gig will follow the boy-meets-girl,
boy-loses-girl, boy-wins-girl back theme - something Jones will
know a little about, having been married six times.
