The Overwhelming
BY ANGELA KELLY29/ 9/2006
RWANDA and its 1994 civil war is the setting for The
Overwhelming which comes to Manchester's Library Theatre next
week.
One of the country's most admired producers of contemporary
theatre, Out of Joint, returns to the city with this critically
acclaimed thriller and box-office hit.
It was written by American writer JT Rogers and tells the story of
idealistic academic Jack Exley (Matthew Marsh) who uproots his
family from Illinois to Kigali, Rwanda's capital, to write a book
about healthcare in Africa.
Suddenly, his seemingly innocent trip descends into crisis when the
doctor he plans to interview vanishes, prompting a dangerous
journey into a country knee-deep in suspicion and brutality.
Preparing for the production, which includes Andrew Garfield
(above) in the cast, Rogers and Max Stafford-Clark travelled to
Rwanda, and this thought-provoking drama is the result.
It runs from Tuesday, October 3 to Saturday, October 7. Ticket
details from the box-office on 0161 236 7110 or visit
www.librarytheatre.com
The play's author, JT Rogers, will lead an after-show discussion
next Friday (October 6) and there will also be an after-show
discussion with the cast on the opening night, Tuesday.
