Putting one's ego on show
by Paul R Taylor17/ 8/2006
THE role of the ego in contemporary art is the focus of a new
exhibition at Castlefield Gallery. Making Love To My Ego features
the work of several artists, brought together by emerging
Manchester-based curators Another Product to explore
self-representation in art.
The exhibition, which runs until Sunday, September 24, rejects the
notion that the self-portrait can ever represent an artist's true
self. Instead, the artists represent their egos and alter egos in
their work in different ways.
The installations include artist Arthur Neve's Het Beest (Dutch for
The Beast), in which he dons a thick felt rabbit costume to explore
existential loneliness.
Performed and recorded on the opening night, the 6ft rabbit is a
melancholic figure unable to communicate with the audience and
trapped in a closed world of repetitive movements. Other works,
only slightly less bizarre, include Richard Dedomenici's Quit Your
Flappin', Lisa Holden's With Cupid and Partridge, and Charles
Citron's The Spanking: Joe and the Angel.
Nine experimental pieces that explore ego and identity will be
shown on Purescreen #14 between 6pm and 8pm on Friday, September
8.
The exhibition catalogue includes three commissioned essays on the
subject of ego, including one by Dr Ian Parker, professor of
psychology at Manchester Metropolitan University.
He will chair a panel discussion about the exhibition on Thursday,
September 14, from 6pm-8pm at the gallery.
It will consider the role of self-representation in contemporary
art and the relationship between art and psychoanalysis. It also
features exhibition curators Dawn Woolley and James Moore and
artists Daniel O'Reilly and Richard Dedomenici.
Admission to the discussion is free but booking is required. Call
the gallery on 0161 832 8034.
The gallery, in Hewitt Street, Knott Mill, is open from Wednesday
to Sunday, 1pm-6pm.
