Foreigner in city
30/ 6/2006
ROCK band Foreigner are touring the UK for the first time in 12
years, but the music has never really been away. Whether it's Cold
As Ice on one of those postal order CD compilations advertised on
late night TV, or a panpipe version of I Want To Know What Love Is
at the garden centre, it's always on in the background
somewhere.
The band (above) was originally formed In New York in 1976 and
enjoyed a golden era in the early 80s, selling more than 50 million
records worldwide. That mix of inoffensive blues, keyboard-heavy
rock and pop is still popular, as the gig at the Apollo tomorrow
(Saturday, July 1) is sold out. But record sales have been poor
since the band reformed in 1990.
British journeyman rocker Mick Jones is still at the helm, but
singer Lou Gramm has been replaced by former Hurricane frontman
Kelly Hansen. They are joined by veteran members Jeff Jacobs and
Tom Gimbel, and new recruits Jeff Pilson and Jason Bonham.
