MUSIC: Brett Anderson, Royal Northern College of Music, 26 Sep

David Sue
24/ 9/2008

SINGER Brett Anderson is clearly a firm believer in acting your age.

Fifteen years ago, as the young frontman in Britpop band Suede, he was the very definition of rock‘n’roll subversion – a hip-swinging, androgynous rock animal who spoke out in his interviews about drug abuse and sordid sexual antics.

He was exactly the sort of rock star who was born to upset Daily Mail readers (which he did, frequently). To his credit though, Anderson realises that rock‘n’roll outrage is a young man’s game, and now, at the age of 41, he’s matured in very dignified and respectable fashion.

Since Suede split up in 2003, Anderson has reinvented himself a solo performer, and one who oozes arty, po-faced maturity. His two solo albums to date have very little in common with his Suede past, redefining Anderson as an introspective crooner who wears black polo necks and sits down solemnly at the piano to pour his heart out.

Music critics haven’t been exactly overwhelmed by his new direction, and even Anderson himself has resorted to performing old Suede songs at his gigs to appease the crowds.

Nevertheless, you have to applaud the man for moving on from his past and maturing in dignified manner.
