DRAMA: The Glee Club, Library Theatre, until 18 Oct

Angela Kelly
17/ 9/2008

THE youngest of the McGann acting dynasty stars in an song-filled production which opens Library Theatre’s new season.

The Glee Club is Richard Cameron’s play about a group of hard-working, hard-drinking Yorkshire miners in 1962.

Their singing group is facing both the cultural challenge of the imminent Swinging Sixties and internal tensions among its five members.

Jack, Bant, Walt, Scobie and Colin are workmates. Colin is young, obsessed with the new music of the day, while the others have spent most of their working lives right at the coal-face and are rugged men who live as hard as they work.

Their group, the Glee Club, is a popular turn in local pubs and clubs, raising a fortune for good causes through performing songs by the likes of Mario Lanza.

But change is in the air, and among the group.

Can it survive into a new era?

Stephen McGann heads the cast, well-known for playing Sean Reynolds in TV’s Emmerdale and with many West End credits to his name.

The show includes Philip Cox, Salford-based Jack Lord, Manchester’s John Elkington, Robert Emms and Oldham-born Andrew Whitehead.

The Glee Club runs from Friday, September 19 to Saturday, October 18.

For tickets, priced £9 to £18.50, ring 0161 236 7110 or visit www.librarytheatre.com.
