FESTIVAL: A Day at the Races, Moho Live, Tib Street, and Night and Day, Oldham Street, Saturday 2 Aug

IF YOU'RE a festival organiser, it must be tempting to think ‘big’ equals better – big venues, big headline acts and big megabucks sponsorship deals.

Size might define many summer festivals but the organisers of this weekend’s Day at the Races event are keen to do things on a more modest scale.

A one-day city centre-based festival, it’s a mini celebration of all things independent and alternative, a gathering of music and bands that have been pushed underground into their own niche by more mainstream events. So instead of Jay-Z, you’ll get the cream of underground indie, and instead of muddy fields, you’ll get something rather more leftfield.

Rather wisely – taking into account the tempestuous Manchester weather – the organisers are situating the whole thing indoors, at Moho Live and bohemian music bar Night and Day. They both may be relatively small spaces, but in true Doctor Who Tardis style, once you’re inside you’ll encounter a whole new dimension of stellar indie treats.

Of the 15 international acts performing, particular highlights include bouncy Welsh popsters Los Campesinos, quirky American songwriter Jeffrey Lewis and Icelandic electro wizards Mum.

A small festival delivering an abundance of underground treats? As the saying goes, it’s not about the size of a festival, it’s what you do with it that counts.
