DRAMA: The English Game, Lowry from Tuesday 24 June
Angela Kelly18/ 6/2008
CRICKET is the name of the game in Richard Bean’s new play, which comes to The Lowry next week.
The English Game is not simply sport, however, but a funny and vivid exploration of the modern British psyche, seen through the lens of a simple game of cricket.
The Nightwatchmen are an amateur London cricket team. As they gather on a sunny Sunday afternoon to face Bernard and his squad, they while away the hours smoking cigarettes, drinking tea and discussing life, love, politics and the correct interpretation of the LBW rule. At once brilliantly comic, true and touching, the play is a revealing dissection of the political and social tensions which underpin our society and what it means to be English in 2008.
The combined talents of Richard Bean and the Headlong Theatre are entertainingly showcased here.
The play runs from Tuesday to Saturday. For tickets ring 0870 787 5793.
