MUSIC: Yazoo, Apollo, Saturday 7 June

POP reformations seem less like an act of romance, more one of contractual obligation these days.
The rise and rise of the Eighties package tour – filled with the likes of Rick Astley, T’Pau and Curiosity Killed the Cat – has opened the doors for endless pop relics to chase the comeback trail.
Yet one outfit who have evaded the nostalgia gravy train are synth-poppers Yazoo. It probably didn’t help that Vince Clarke and Alison Moyet – still best known as component parts of the band despite massively successful careers apart – weren’t exactly on speaking terms by the time they split in 1983. All of which makes their decision to reform a triumph of romance over finance.
The story goes that Moyet and Clarke have been slowly mending their friendship via email.
Whereas other Eighties pop groups might ooze kitsch and cheese, Yazoo’s comeback is more about confirming their place as a truly under-rated electro-pop group. Their 1982 debut album, Upstairs at Eric’s, took the electro pulse of artier bands like Kraftwerk and added some glossy pop sheen.
Chart-topping songs Only You and Don’t Go still stand up as groundbreaking moments of digi-pop magnificence.
It’s a shame Yazoo are sadly still lumbered with that awful title (surely one of the worst pop group names ever), but they prove pop comebacks can be made for genuine, even romantic, reasons.
