MUSIC: Here and Now, MEN Arena, Tuesday 13 May

7/ 5/2008

IN THE hit BBC series Ashes to Ashes, the lead character Alex Drake (played by Keeley Hawes), falls into a coma and is transported back in time to the eighties – her worst possible nightmare.

But the eighties clearly weren’t a nightmare for everyone – as the success of the Here and Now tour proves.

The closest thing you can get to cultural time travel, the yearly Here and Now tour is a dream ticket back to the eighties. The good thing is how much the acts themselves are eager to see the funny side and embrace the mood of camp fluffyness. The likes of ABC, Bananarama, Paul Young and Curiosity Killed The Cat know exactly what they’re here to provide: to wheel out their biggest hits, revive the naff dance moves (provided their old bones aren’t too creaky), and generally indulge in the mood of kitsch ephemera.

The biggest draw for this year’s tour is undoubtedly vocal legend Rick Astley.

The former Stock, Aitken, Waterman star has experienced something of a career revival of late, thanks to a (very tongue-in-cheek) tribute on website YouTube. Thankfully, Astley has seen the funny side and his rendition of pop classic ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ is surely worth the ticket price alone.
