MUSIC: Willie Nelson, Apollo, Sunday 11 May

THE rule for any true outlaw is that they must always maintain an air of menace and danger, kicking against authority at any given opportunity.

Songwriter Willie Nelson, despite reaching the grand old age of 75 this year, must surely rank as one of American music’s greatest rock outlaws.

While most musical legends settle into cosy contentment in their elder years, Nashville songwriter Nelson still continues to kick against the system.

He rallies against the US government, he supports environmental causes (he’s even started up his own biofuel company), and his views on cannabis are notorious (he’s campaigned to have it legalised, and has been arrested for possession).

Alongside his extra-curricular activities, what makes Willie Nelson all the more remarkable is his incredible work ethic.

At an age when all his peers aren’t so much slowing down as actually dying, Nelson maintains a rigorous touring schedule (around 100 gigs a year) and still puts out at least one album a year.

Nelson might have every excuse to reach for the pipe and slippers in his 75th year.

But whilst there are great protest songs to be written and conventions still to kick against, this true rock outlaw will keep on rocking.
